St James and St John United Church

Love’s memory is long. As we come to the last Sunday of Advent, we recall the many times we have been here before, with still so much to do and so much love left unexpressed. Scripture tells us of the promised Savior, fulfilled in the birth of Jesus. Love’s promise is often kept in unexpected ways.

“Jesus said to them, I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:34

Loving God, your mercy and compassion endure forever. Open our hearts, that we may receive your love; and following the example of your Son, spread that love to a love-starved world. Through Jesus Christ, who loved us to the end. Amen.

HYMN Verse 1, 2, 3 & 4 “Hope is a Star”

HYMN “O Little Town of Bethlehem”

SOLO “Breath of Heaven”

Dear Lord, You are the only wise God!
Thank You for Your faithfulness through the ages.
You spoke promises through the prophets.
In time, You revealed Your glory in Jesus Christ.
Strengthen us in faith to follow Your will today.
Empower us to tell our neighbors about You.
May these offerings support the ways our church exhibits
Your steadfast love for all generations. Amen.

CLOSING HYMN “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing!”

A Prayer for Christmas Time
Lord, we worship You during this Christmas season.
You are our wonderful Counselor, mighty God, everlasting Father,
and Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6).
We choose to put You at the center of our family life
as we celebrate Your birth.
Keep us from distractions and help us
to invite You into all our family activities.
Teach us to pray and help us to glorify
and worship You in our family during
this busy time of year.
Give us a spirit of wisdom
and revelation that we might
know You better. Amen.
(Ephesians 1:17
