St James & St John United Church

December 13, 2020

This season of preparation is half done, and today we light the third candle of our Advent ring to remind us that there is so much about which we rejoice.

“You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.” Isaiah 55:12
(Rev. Alice lights the candles)

Gracious God, You came to us in human flesh and You abide with us in the Holy Spirit. Fill us with your joy, and help us shine as a light to the world. Through Jesus Christ, who makes our joy complete. Amen.

HYMN Verse 1, 2 & 3 “Hope is a Star”

Old Testament Reading: Micah 5:2
New Testament Reading: Luke 1 (Selected Verses)

HYMN “What Child is This”

Most wonderful God, You have called us not to slavery but to liberty, not to grief but to joy. Please renew that call in our minds and hearts today, that as we serve You we may do it without anxiety, taking faith-risks to the glory of Your name. Amen

CLOSING HYMN “Once in Royal David’s City”

A Prayer for Joy

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the joy that entered the world when Jesus was born.
Thank you for becoming God with us.
Lord, sometimes it’s difficult to live joyfully, especially in difficult of buy seasons.
Please purify our hearts this week and remind us that You are in control.
Help us to consider it joy when we experience trials of any kind because we know You’re creating something beautiful and eternal.
As we fix our eyes and hearts on You, fill our souls with renewed strength, courage and hope.
Lord, You are always worthy of being praised and we want to worship You! Amen.

What’s Up at St. James & St. John?

20th ANNUAL MEMORIAL ANGELS PROJECT– If you wish to place an angel on the Christmas tree in the church, in memory or in honor of a loved one, you may do so by placing your request and donation on the church offering plate on Sunday mornings, at the church office, or in the mailbox at the church center. Requests must be submitted by Friday, December 18th. Thank you, Pastoral Care Team

Please phone or email the church office to reserve for the 4:00 PM and 7:30 PM Christmas Eve Services. A 2:00 PM service will be offered if the 4:00 PM service is filled.

LIVE STREAMING – Live-streaming of the Worship service is now available on Facebook at 11:00 AM. However, it will also be recorded and the link will be placed on the website and Church Facebook page on Sunday afternoons.

SALVATION ARMY CHRISTMAS PROJECT – The deadline to donate a gift card or monetary donation for the Salvation Army Christmas Project is Monday, December 14th. Thank you, The Outreach Team.

CHURCH ENVELOPES – The church envelopes are ready for pickup; they are located on the table at the back of the church. Many members have been unable to attend church services – it would be much appreciated if those who are in church on Sundays, could deliver the envelopes to the members who live close by.

MEMBER OF CONGREGATION MOVED – Mary Houlston, a member of our congregation since 1943, has moved to Fredericton to live with her daughter and family. Mary was an active member of the congregation; singing with the Senior choir for approximately 45 years. For many years Mary made it possible for other seniors to come to church by driving them every Sunday; she will be missed! Here is her new address for anyone who would like to wish her well:
215 Bradshaw Drive, New Maryland, NB, E3C 1H3
